All citizens have a right to clean drinking water and quality sanitation. Right2Water asks the European Union to guarantee this human right by promoting water supply and sanitation as essential public services for all. These rights must be implemented. The aim is to collect one million signatures from all over Europe to make this happen.

The first successful Citizens Initiative from Right2Water, with 1.884.790 signatures, urges that:

  • The EU institutions and Member States be obliged to ensure that all inhabitants enjoy the right to water and sanitation.
  • Water supply and management of water resources not be subject to ‘internal market rules’ and that water services are excluded from liberalisation.
  • The EU increases its efforts to achieve universal access to water and sanitation.

This campaign is a tool to commit the EU and Member States to implement the human right to water and sanitation. It is a tool to change the mind-set in the European Commission from a market-based approach with the focus on competition to a rights-based approach with the focus on public service. It aims to achieve global access to water and sanitation and to safeguard the limited public water resources for future generations.
