In January 2012, the European Commission published its proposal for the revision of Directives 2000/60/EG and 2008/105/EG on priority substances in the field of water policy. The proposal added 15 new substances to the current list of priority substances and suggested stricter environmental quality standards for four existing substances. A comprehensive (re)assessment of the priority substances list preceded this proposal.
On 17 April 2013, the Parliament, Council and Commission came to an agreement on environmental quality standards for priority substances. Priority pollutants are listed in the annex of the Water Framework Directive.
