Since 2001, a Common Implementation Strategy (CIS) has been in operation, bringing together national experts, stakeholders and the European Commission, who were involved first in implementation of the Water Framework Directive, and later the Floods Directive.

The results of this work, including guidance documents, resource documents and key events related to different aspects of implementation of the CIS, are available on CIRCA, and thematic CIS information sheets are available, giving an overview with direct links to key documents.

EUWMA is represented in several CIS working groups. In March 2014, EUWMA co-organised the CIS Agriculture Working Group in Oldenburg, Germany. The main objective of the meeting was to consider progress on the mandate of the Working Group set out in the new CIS Work Programme and to learn about the issues and best practices on water management and agriculture in Lower Saxony.
